Unfortunately, many tasks remain after a funeral or memorial service. Seek guidance from
trusted professionals to help you through these various tasks. This list serves as a reminder for
some of the most common tasks, but your situation may be different. Below the list are several
resource websites that may be helpful.
Post-Funeral Estate Tasks
- Locate your loved one’s important documents (birth certificate, social security card, will,
power of attorney, military discharge papers, life insurance, retirement accounts, etc.)
- Notify your family attorney and/or financial professionals
- Contact any previous employers & unions for information on potential pensions, insurance,
benefits, unpaid work, etc.
- File claims for all life insurance policies
- Notify banks, credit unions, credit card companies, etc.
- Cancel any unnecessary services or subscriptions (health insurance, auto insurance, medical
prescriptions, etc.)
- Cancel driver’s license and change vehicle titles
- Notify the 3 credit-reporting agencies
- If they were a veteran, inquire about any VA-related survivor benefits
- Review and transfer all deeds, titles, and accounts that were in your loved one’s name
- Notify Registrar of Voters
- If necessary, forward mail
- Cancel or memorialize any social media accounts & email accounts
